Servant Leadership Delivers Hall Of Fame Career

Last night while traveling to Prague I read the letters to the editor in the most recent Success Magazine and found the below testimony of what hard work and servant leadership can produce.

As high school seniors, my friends and I were thrilled to help transport equipment for a college football team in the Fiesta Bowl. As we struggled to get equipment to the locker room of a school where players would practice, the team’s equipment managers sat around except for one guy who worked as hard as any of us. Sweating and breathing heavily as we took one of many loads. I said, ‘Thanks for helping us so much, especially when all the other equipment managers just sit there.’

He said he was actually on the team. I responded, You should be at the hotel reception!’ He said he was doing what he thought was best for the team and added, ‘Mark my words, I’m going to be the best quarterback in the NFL.’ He didn’t seem to be bragging as he said he would study and train harder, learn to read defenses better, and do whatever work was needed to realize his goal. I believe he said he was a third or fourth string quarterback but wanted to excel as a team leader. I remember thinking this guy was different-that he would achieve what he said-but later forgot his name.

Once Dan Marino became famous as the Miami Dolphins quarterback and I saw his photo. I realized who helped me that day. What a great role mode! So glad you featured him in December.”
